Car servicing

One workshop's service can cover more or less than another's under the same name. Asking each mechanic the same questions shows what each price includes.

08What warranty do you give on the parts and the work, and for how long?Ask what it covers for each.

What changes the price

A minor service and a major service can sound alike on the phone. Asking which items each one covers is the quickest way to see why two prices differ.

The car itself matters too. Its make, its age and how far it has been driven change which parts and fluids the service calls for.

Before you drop the car off

Write down anything you have noticed, such as a noise, a warning light or a pull to one side, and tell the mechanic when you drop the car off.

Bring the service book if the car has one, and leave a phone number you will answer during the day.

Where to check

  • ABN Lookup, Australian Business Register

    Shows whether a business's ABN is active or cancelled, its business type and its GST status, and the Register says the public can use it to check a business before buying.
